I just finished watching episodes 1 through 6 of “My Loveable Girl,” and the biggest thing that is bugging me to no end is not anything about the drama itself, but all of the comments I keep finding bloody everywhere about Rain and Krystal having “no chemistry.” Seriously, from a writer’s perspective, this is driving me crazy.
It’s not that Se Na and Hyun Wook have no chemistry. It’s that there’s not SUPPOSED to be any chemistry between them right now—especially from Hyun Wook’s perspective. At least not yet.
Certainly, the chemistry is already apparent and plentiful on Se Na’s side—as it should be. After all, she’s a young and naive girl, and a “handsome dog owner” appears from out of nowhere, swoops in, and saves her from impending disaster. So, of course it’s perfectly appropriate for her to become enamored with this stranger hero fairly quickly, don’t you think? Of course it is.
Yes, she’s smitten. You can clearly see it in her expression in almost every single episode—whether she’s around Hyun Wook or not. In fact, Krystal’s portrayal of Se Na and her steadily growing infatuation with Hyun Wook is some of the best acting I’ve seen in a novice actor in quite awhile. (Great job, Krystal!)
Conversely, Hyun Wook is fighting his growing feelings for all he is worth. And rightly so. His intentions of finding his deceased girlfriend’s sister were honorable. He felt horrifically guilty about and totally responsible for So Eun’s death (whether he was responsible or not), and he wanted desperately to find her sister (who he had never met, for some odd reason) to make sure she was living well—or at least that she was okay.
When he finally finds her and realizes that she’s NOT okay, he becomes determined to help her without letting her know who he is. But why? Why doesn’t he let her know who he is? Well, because later it’s revealed that he “acted like a complete jerk” when So Eun died (for some reason not yet revealed), and so he knows that if Se Na finds out who he is she won’t accept his (“the jerk’s”) help. And then she would be back in the same boat that she was in before he swooped in to save her.
But there’s another problem. As a consequence of his actions, Hyun Wook has unwittingly put himself in the extremely difficult position of having to be by Se Na’s side all the time. Which is a big problem, because Se Na is just as charming as her sister was—maybe even more so. Uh oh.
In Korea, the idea of dating your deceased girlfriend’s sister is distasteful and just isn’t done. Well, okay, it might be done, but it isn’t the norm, for sure. Heck, it’s not really even done here in the U.S. without major family fallout.
True story. One of my friends dated one brother, broke up with him, and then married the other brother. Neither of their families has gotten over it yet—and it has been like 30 years since they’ve been married. Because both brothers are alive and well, you can imagine how fun the family gatherings are, right? To this day there is still family drama going on over that. Yikes.
Understandably, Hyun Wook knows that his falling in love with Se Na would not be in her best interest. So, he is trying to dampen down not only the feelings he’s beginning to feel for her, but also HER infatuation—which he can plainly see, because it’s written all over her face whenever she is around him.
Look how harshly he rebuffed her in episode 6 when she invited him to a celebratory dinner. Hyun Wook knew Se Na wanted to be alone with him—and why. He also knew that, as the company president, his going to a celebratory dinner alone, with a female trainee, would have been totally inappropriate.
So, he took whats-her-face along with him, so that he WOULDN’T have to be alone with Se Na—who is not only a girl he shouldn’t be falling in love with, but who is also a trainee in his company. Seriously, how hypocritical would it be for him to “touch a trainee” after he had just scolded his father for doing the same thing? (See how the writer did that? Clever fellow.)
Even Hyun Wook’s expression at the end of episode 6, in spite of his clear attraction to her (per the slow-mo effects in the club, anyway) simply reeks of “okay, this just cannot happen.” Just wait and see. I’d bet you money (if I had any) that he rebuffs her again at the beginning of Ep. 7 and runs away like a scared santokki.
As far as I’m concerned, Hyun Wook’s falling in love with his deceased girlfriend’s sister is the situation that will create the MOST dramatic tension in this drama. As it should.
I must say, though, that the thought that eventually Hyun Wook is going to have to come to terms with the fact that he is “in love” with So Eun’s sister, Se Na, delights me to no end, because Rain is such a great actor that his “tortured soul” scenes should be totally AWESOME. Perhaps it’s mean of me to want to watch Hyun Wook have a meltdown, but I don’t care. Rain melts down so well, that I simply can’t wait to watch it. So sorry. (Okay, no. I’m really not sorry.)
Are there things wrong with this drama? Well, sure there are, as there are with every single dramatic piece that has ever been written. Frankly, the plot is moving a bit too slowly for me, and the fact that the writer used almost every K-drama trick in the playbook in the first three episodes was a wee bit over the top. Okay, who am I kidding. It was way over the top. Sigh.
But the chemistry between Hyun Wook and Se Na? There is not a damned thing wrong with that. Period. At least not yet there isn’t. Maybe I will feel differently after episode 12. If so, I’ll let you know.
In any event, I don’t know why people are complaining about the chemistry anyway. This story isn’t even about chemistry. It’s really not. What it’s really about is the power of love, the healing of forgiveness and, if you work hard enough, the realization of dreams.
Which is good, because I can always use a little more love, forgiveness and dreaming myself. Can’t you?

Про другое. Пока жду этонедельных серий, смотрю It's okay, that's love.
